Breast Augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enlarge and reshape the breasts after changes from pregnancy, as well as aging. It also can be used to correct asymmetries and difference in development of the breast.
Good candidates for breast augmentation are patients who are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too small, patients who have had significant weight loss that has changed the size and shape, patients who have had children who have lost the firmness after breast feeding or pregnancy, or significant breast asymmetry where one breast is smaller than the other.
It is quite important that in young women, the breast development is complete, but it is also important that patients have realistic expectations. Patients need to completely understand that the reason for the surgery is to feel better about themselves.
During the consultation, Dr. Rigano will review your own medical history, as well as your family history as it pertains to breast health. He will then listen to your views of what you would like the procedure to accomplish and then discuss the options with you.
Surgically, implants can be placed underneath the breasts or underneath the pectoralis muscle. Incision choices can be through the axillary area, underneath the breast or around the areola. Depending on the position of the implant and the size of the implant, all of these factors need to be carefully considered to make a proper choice for each individual patient.
Silicone and saline breast implants allow multiple options and need to be carefully selected.
