Surgical Procedures

Liposuction is a technique used to remove unwanted areas of fat deposits from all areas of the body. By removing the deep and underlying fact, it allows the skin to tighten and then change contour over a longer period of time.
Common areas that benefit from liposuction are the chin, neck, breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs and knees. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction since fat itself does not really weight much at all. It is a method of removing localized fat that does not typically respond will to dieting and exercise.

Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is a very safe operation when it is done in a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon's hands. Safe volumes are commonly done on an outpatient basis using tumescence or ultrasonic techniques. Scars for liposuction are small and are strategically hidden from view.
Planning the surgery is quite important and this needs to be individually done in a one-on-one consultation in the office. The patient and the surgeon need to understand all areas which can be improved with liposuction and also discuss other body contouring methods which may be needed, such as lower body lifts or tummy tucks. A combination of procedures is sometimes helpful, but certainly need to be considered carefully.
Depending on the volume in the area of liposuction, it can be done under local anesthesia with IV sedation using a tumescent technique or it can be done under general anesthesia.

After surgery, compression garments are quite important as they can help reduce swelling and minimize fluid collection and other problems. They need to be worn for several weeks after surgery until the tissues start healing strongly and the skin begins to shrink to obtain a new contour.
Even though the incisions are small, liposuction itself is a significant surgery. As with any significant surgery, some risks are involved. These can be outlined in detail during a consultation. Most patients return to work after a few days for smaller areas and up to 2 to 3 weeks for larger areas. Suction-Assisted Lipectomy is a very highly effective technique that is one of the most common procedures performed in cosmetic surgery. The results are permanent, providing patients continue to eat sensibly and exercise regularly. Most patients are very satisfied with liposuction and they feel more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes.
